Stopover in Chile's vibrant capital, set against the backdrop of the spectacular Andes. Santiago de Chile beats the pulse of this fascinating and varied country. Founded in 1541 by Pedro de Valdivia, it has grown to be a metropolis of 4.6 million people that reflects ethnic diversity and combines modern structures with grand Spanish colonial edifices that hark back to a bygone era. Apart from visiting palaces, churches and museums, a trip up to the statue of the Virgin Mary on Cerro San Cristobal offers spectacular views over the city. We also visit a vineyard on the outskirts of Santiago and sample some of Chile's world famous wines.
